Gantala Press worked with women laborers of the Nagkahiusang Mamumuo sa Suyapa Farm (NAMASUFA) union in their protest camp at Liwasang Bonifacio on December 21, 2018. The writing session aimed to collect narratives of the plantation workers to produce a zine that will publicize the abusive working conditions at Sumifru Corporation. Sumifru is a multinational company that exports cavendish bananas to Japan, Singapore, and other countries. All earnings from the sale of the zine will be donated to the union.
The project began with a mini discussion of literary works by Bebang Siy, Benilda Santos, Early Sol Gadong, and Luchie Maranan. The workers then engaged in a writing activity in which they described their daily struggles and experiences. Gantala Press also organized a pop-up booth and call for donations of medicines, toiletries, and cash that will be used to buy food, create prop materials, and for other expenses.
NAMASUFA workers traveled from Compostela Valley to engage in a dialogue with DOLE and other government institutions. They call to end contractualization and demand for benefits, just wages, and job security.
